SustainAbility Solutions Africa provides project auditing and management consulting services to enable transparency, accountability and effective service delivery for governments, donors, NGOs and businesses in Southern Africa. We work in partnership with project implementers to provide efficient and effective management solutions that enable the project to achieve its objectives of making a meaningful and measurable difference in the way intended.

History      

SustainAbility Solutions Africa (SSA) was founded by a former PricewaterhouseCoopers partner with more than 20 years of experience in the International Development Agency environment.

Its directors and senior staff members collectively have over 150 years of financial management, auditing, project management, training and capacity-building experience. SSA brings significant breadth and depth of experience from working with public sector organizations such as the EC, USAID, the World Bank, Global Fund, CDC, DFID, SIDA, UNAIDS, JICA, AfDB and SADC. SSA staff members have also provided services to private sector companies such as First Rand, RMB, Hollard Insurance, ITEC, Liberty Life, ARAMCO, Anglo American, etc. and worked in more than 20 countries across East and Southern Africa with significant experience in South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Due to changes in the legal and regulatory environment (e.g. Sarbanes Oxley and independence requirements) it is extremely difficult for large global professional service firms to offer comprehensive services within the International Development space. Regional and locally-based auditing and consulting firms are now pivotal for the provision of end-to-end auditing, financial management consulting and capacity building services in the donor/recipient environment.

SSA provides the experience and expertise of a global, “Big 4” professional services firm with the responsiveness and cost-effectiveness of a local, specialist auditing and consulting firm.

Compliance Reviews      
 
 

Within the world of donors and grants adherence to rules, regulations, policies and procedures is extremely important. Accountability sometimes becomes a burden to NGO’s when rules are changing on an ongoing basis and knowledge is not present within the grantee organization.

Over the last two decades the staff of SustainAbility Solutions Africa has gained extensive experience among a wide range of donors. From the US Government to the European Union, from JICA to Scandinavian embassies, but also from well-known international private companies. We utilize this expertise when performing our compliance reviews.

As part of a compliance review we typically carry out the following:
  • interviews with key staff to identify processes and procedures
  • evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness for compliance with grant contract/ cooperative agreement
  • assessment on organizational risks
  • testing of processes and procedures, targeted, preferably based on areas of high risk
  • data sampling as verification on compliance with the procedures as per grant / cooperative agreement
  • internal control assessments
  • compliance with grant terms and conditions
  • cost share analysis
  • follow-up of prior audit findings
A compliance review can be carried out any time during the project. However, as a donor requires compliance from the start of a project, it is preferable to have a general assessment on capacity,capability and knowledge carried out at commencement of the project. This will reduce the risk of non-compliance and therefore the risk to need to repay (part of) the funds. 

USAID / CDC


Over the last few years the US Government, through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has significantly increased its support to Southern Africa. Unfortunately not all recipients are aware of the extensive rules and regulations that come with the signing of a grant or cooperative agreement.

SSA is one of the few firms in Southern Africa that renders US Government-specific services. These services typically involve (in relation to USAID/CDC rules):

  • donor compliance review
  • assessment of policies and procedures
  • training of financial and program staff on compliance
  • special purpose "yellow book" audits

Financial Management Training      


With its in-depth understanding of not only funding organisations and donor recipients but also of general accounting and financial management, SustainAbility Solutions Africa has developed several different courses in Financial Management.

These courses target a wide variety of audiences. Where possible (e.g. for a training to one specific organisation) SSA will tailor the training to the specific needs and requirements in order to ensure maximum benefit for all participants. This has proven to be an absolute crucial point to most organisations we have facilitated trainings for.
